New York asks for 16 hours of classroom instruction and 2 hours of live fire before you can apply. We teach both, in Earlton, to the standard DCJS and the State Police set.
The path
Most people find out how long this takes after they have already started. Here is the whole sequence, in order, so you can plan around it.
In-person instruction on the curriculum New York State DCJS and the State Police wrote. Safe handling, storage, the law, and what you are responsible for once you carry. There is a written exam at the end.
Range time with an instructor, ending in a proficiency test you have to pass. For a lot of our students this is the first time they have fired a handgun, and that is fine. It is what the two hours are for.
Proof you finished both halves, issued by us. Your county wants to see it with your application, so keep it somewhere you can find it.
Licensing runs county by county, and the paperwork is not identical everywhere. Ask us who to call in Greene County and what to bring.
One caution. The above summarizes state law as we understand it. Requirements get amended and counties interpret them differently, so confirm the current specifics with your county licensing officer before you file anything.
